IDC: Mobile ad market to hit $1.8 billion by 2014

As smartphone adoption continues to skyrocket, mobile ad spending is expected to experience similar growth, according to a new report from IDC.
The study found that mobile ad spending is forecast to grow from $220 million this year to $1.8 billion by 2014. In a shorter-term perspective, mobile ad spending is expected to hit $433 million this year, representing an increase of 97 percent.
"Mobile advertising is certainly the hottest online ad segment," wrote Karston Weide, IDC analyst and author of the report.
Weide also cited Google's intended acquisition of AdMob and similar events as proof that "major players are getting ready to take advantage of this new online ad segment," Business Insider quoted from the report.
"Not only does that mean that mobile outperformed online advertising at large by leaps and bounds
and will continue to do so, it also means that there is now real money in this segment," the news provider cited from Weide.
MediaPost noted that the IDC report may not even capture the full extent of investments made by integrated marketing professionals in the mobile sphere.
"Like social media, a large portion of the spending in mobile is going toward earned media - items like branded apps, promotional contests, mobile coupons and mobile web pages," MediaPost reported. "Such investments aren't typically reflected in the traditional third-party ad dollars projected in industry estimates."
