Google expands real-time search options

Published August 30, 2010

Last year, Google introduced real-time options to its search engine, enabling users to search through recent tweets, social media updates and blogs. Now, the company has separated the service from the traditional portal and is further expanding it.

Launched last Thursday, the company's product manager, Dylan Casey, announced Google Realtime Search now has its own homepage. Realtime Search offers users "powerful tools to help you find what you need," he says. Searchers are now able to refine results according to their geographical location, view full conversations at once and integrate the service to Google Alerts.

As the Wall Street Journal notes, many marketers have used real-time search in the past to deliver relevant ads to consumers. The enhanced Google Realtime Search should enable businesses to fine-tune their digital marketing strategy even further by allowing them to target specific locations and track conversations.

Google's expanded service should be especially helpful because of its broad audience. According to comScore, more than 10 billion queries were conducted by consumers through Google in July. Bing, which also offers a real-time search feature, served only 2 billion.
