Social media draws on the unlikeliest of sources for hot content

Digital marketing veterans are no doubt familiar with the phenomenon of viral content, and just as familiar with the difficulties in turning it to their own ends. The problem with viral content as a marketing strategy is that one can never really be sure what will go viral and what will not.
While much of the hot social media content from this year's Winter Olympic Games has been more or less predictable, who would have guessed that one of the hottest viral Facebook pages would be one devoted to the pants worn by the Norwegian men's curling team? The checkered legwear's Facebook fan page currently has more than 450,000 followers.
Such a figure would be the envy of many company fan pages, which leads some firms to pursue viral success with enthusiasm. However, their efforts in this endeavor are likely for naught, as viral fame is an elusive and unpredictable thing.
That said, keeping abreast of hot social media trends is very important for companies engaged in digital marketing campaigns.
